If building a deck is one of your upcoming home improvement projects this year, you’d want to consider its location on your property. While having a large lot is ideal, it can take a bit of creativity to determine the placement of the structure. This is especially true if you have a small property or a sloped yard.
Read on as we discuss four of the most common deck design types found in most homes.
1. Detached Deck
This type of deck can be located anywhere on your lot, but should be made accessible through steps, pathways or any form of hardscaping. It can be built over areas with uneven terrain or poor drainage and can be complemented with landscaping elements like shrubs or flower beds.
2. Attached Deck
Located at the back of an L-shaped or U-shaped house, an attached deck is very much like a patio, but is raised slightly and made of wood or wood composite decking materials. It can serve as the bridge that connects your indoors with the outdoors and can have a roof or awning to provide shade.
3. Multi-Level Deck
This type of deck is perfect for residential properties situated on a terrain, hill, slope or rocky landscaping. It is a series of decks on different levels connected by flights of stairs or paths. The great thing about this design is that the spaces for each level can be maximized for many uses. As a whole, the deck adds visual appeal to your home.
4. Second-Level Deck
Putting your deck on either the rooftop or on top of your garage is one of the many ways you can be creative with your outdoor living space. Urban dwellings usually have this type of deck because it provides better views than a raised, ground-level deck and offers more privacy.
